What Pillar 3a is

Pillar 3a is Switzerland's tied private pension. You contribute voluntarily each year up to a legal maximum, and the money is locked until close to retirement, with defined early-withdrawal cases such as buying a home or leaving Switzerland. It is the third of the country's three pillars, alongside the state AHV (pillar 1) and your occupational pension (pillar 2).

The 2026 contribution limits

If you are employed and covered by a pension fund, you can pay in up to CHF 7'258 in 2026. If you are self-employed without a pension fund, the limit is 20% of your net earned income, up to CHF 36'288. These are the maximums set by the federal tax authorities; your own limit is whichever applies to you.

The 31 December deadline

Contributions count for the calendar year in which the money actually reaches your 3a account, and the cut-off is 31 December. Anything not paid in by year-end cannot be added later for that year. From the 2025 contribution year, retroactive top-ups for missed years are also possible once you have first maxed the current year.

How to use this calculator

Choose whether you have a pension fund, enter your income if self-employed, and add what you have already contributed this year. The calculator shows your limit, what you have paid, and the room remaining before the deadline, so you know exactly how much you could still pay in.
