How gross to net works in Switzerland

Your gross salary is the figure in your contract. From it your employer deducts mandatory social insurance every month, which leaves your net salary. For most residents income tax is not taken from the salary at all. You pay it separately after filing your tax return, so your net salary and your final take-home after tax are two different numbers.

Which deductions come off your gross salary

Three contributions are the same across the country: AHV, IV and EO together take 5.3% with no ceiling, and unemployment insurance (ALV) takes 1.1% on salary up to CHF 148'200. On top of that come non-occupational accident insurance (NBU), which depends on your employer, and your pension-fund contribution (Pillar 2 / BVG), which starts at 25 and rises with age. This tool estimates the pension share from your age; your pension certificate has the exact figure.

Net salary vs take-home after tax

Net salary is gross minus social insurance. Take-home after tax subtracts your income tax as well. Because Switzerland bills income tax separately, or withholds it at source for many foreign workers, this calculator shows both: the net salary that actually arrives, and an estimate of the tax that follows so you can plan the full picture.

Why your canton and commune change the result

Switzerland sets income tax at three levels: federal, cantonal and communal. The federal part is the same everywhere, but each canton sets its own brackets and multiplier, and each commune adds its Steuerfuss on top. This calculator covers all 26 cantons: pick yours, and optionally your commune, to see the real spread. Social insurance, by contrast, is identical nationwide.

Frequently asked questions

How much is deducted from a Swiss salary?

Mandatory social insurance takes about 6.4% of a typical salary plus the age-based pension contribution: 5.3% for AHV/IV/EO and 1.1% for unemployment insurance up to CHF 148'200, then accident insurance and Pillar 2. Income tax is on top and usually paid separately.

What is the difference between net salary and after-tax income?

Net salary is your gross minus social-insurance deductions, the amount paid into your account. After-tax income subtracts income tax too. Most Swiss residents receive the full net salary and settle tax later through their tax return.

Is income tax deducted from my salary in Switzerland?

For Swiss citizens and C-permit holders, usually no: you receive your net salary and pay tax after filing. Many foreign workers on a B permit are taxed at source (Quellensteuer), where tax is withheld monthly. Use our Quellensteuer calculator for that case.

What are AHV, IV, EO and ALV?

AHV is the state old-age and survivors pension, IV is disability insurance, EO covers loss of earnings such as military service and parental leave, and ALV is unemployment insurance. Together AHV/IV/EO are 5.3% of salary and ALV is 1.1% up to CHF 148'200, all employee shares.

Does this calculator work for every canton?

Yes. It covers all 26 cantons using official 2025/2026 cantonal tax tables, plus federal tax and your commune's Steuerfuss. Social insurance is national. For a binding figure, check your cantonal tax calculator.
